Online Core Wine Course (Winter Semester)

Sun, January 10, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm
I cannot express how impressed I am with these online wine classes. As someone who is firmly rooted in the brick-and-mortar, I didn’t expect to ever green-light a project like this. This is one of those moments I am glad to be proven wrong.  The one-hour classes are seamless and informative. I love the fact that students can chat with the instructors while the class is ongoing.  Very well done and very intuitive for the students.

 Online Wine Classes

Our online wine classes use the free app Zoom to stream classes. If you do not have a copy of this software, you can download it here:

All students will have access to our live class feed. Access will be granted the day of the class.

The class will include a wine talk, tasting notes, and a presentation. During the lecture, you can ask questions by using the “chat” section of Zoom.

Online Wine Tastings

Students are encouraged to pop open a bottle of wine during class. If the bottle reflects the class theme, all the better! Afterward, we will open the floor to you and all attending students. You will be free to chat, talk about the wines you’ve tasted.

We are on the East Coast, so class times are listed in Eastern Standard Time. We will give everyone five minutes to get situated before we start the class.

Classes are a fun one-hour event designed for self-edification and are not professional wine certifications.

Invitations are sent out the morning of the class at 10 am. If you don’t get your invite, please check your spam!

Virtual Wine Tastings

Our wine classes are some of the most compelling and fun virtual wine tastings available. Spend an hour with one of the top sommelier-instructors in the world!  The only thing virtual is the internet connection separating you from the action.

Virtual Happy Hour!

Our virtual wine classes are an innovative way to hang with friends online and  learn about wine.  There is plenty of opportunity to socialize during these online wine tastings! Come with a few friends, and expect to meet some interesting new people, too!

 Online Wine Courses

We will be soon offering online wine certifications programs from the National Wine School. All online programs are run though their national testing center in California. Certifications will include Level one through three. This is the first time in history that students can earn a national recognized sommelier certification fully online. In many ways, this is the very first online wine school. We are told that programs will be released in Fall 2020.

This is also the first time that students can take classes directly at the National Wine School. Prior to offering online wine courses, the National Wine School only worked with select colleges and universities to offer content for academic use. Professional certification went through the National Wine School. However, classes taken at an accredited university were part of the larger curriculum.

Online Wine School

While NWS offers a gauntlet of online material and coursework since 2007, it has always been to supplement in-class education. The programs to be released are stand alone and differ in significant ways from traditional wine courses. Similar programs have been highly successful in the past few  years, included the UC Davis online winemaking certification program.

Other Options

The wine courses offered by the National Wine School are geared toward the entire wine trade. Their certifications  are earned by winemakers, importers, wine traders, educators,  start-up founders, as well as sommeliers.

If you are looking for a restaurant-specific wine degree, you should probably look to the Court of Master Sommeliers or the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. Their programs are geared specifically toward restaurant careers.
