Raising a Glass to Local Wine Shops: A Celebration of Our Graduates
This Friday marks our semi-annual “Freaks & Geeks” members-only event, and as preparations come together, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible community of wine professionals we’ve nurtured over the years. Many of our graduates have gone on to shape the wine culture in the area, and it’s truly inspiring to see how their influence has taken root in some of the best wine shops around. Let’s dive into what makes this event special and how it ties back to these outstanding alumni.
A Quirky Tradition for the Adventurous Palate
The “Freaks & Geeks” event is a challenge like no other. Members compete in a fun and lighthearted way to bring the most unusual, obscure, or downright eccentric wine of the evening. It’s about breaking boundaries, exploring the unconventional, and, most importantly, growing as a wine enthusiast.
At its core, this event embodies what the Wine School of Philadelphia stands for: pushing the limits of what you know, embracing the weird and wonderful, and using wine as a medium for creativity and discovery.
While we expect an intimate turnout of about 14 attendees—despite the club’s 400 members—the small size is perfect for fostering deeper connections and conversations. For those who haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to join this celebration of the wild side of wine.
Where to Find the Perfect Bottle: Shops Owned by Our Graduates
When it comes to sourcing the right wine for an event like this, our graduates have you covered. Many of the region’s top wine shops are helmed by Wine School of Philadelphia alumni, offering an eclectic array of bottles to spark curiosity and conversation. Here are some standout spots:
- Bloomsday Cafe (414 South 2nd Street, Queen Village)
Owned by Zach Morris, this charming shop and cafe boasts an excellent selection of funky and adventurous wines. Perfect for anyone in search of something off the beaten path. - 320 Market Cafe (Media and Swarthmore)
Run by Jack Cunicelli, 320 Market offers a thoughtful curation of wines that lean toward the unusual. It’s a go-to for those in the Delaware County area looking for a wine that surprises and delights. - Wine Works (Marlton, NJ)
Filippo Cammarata’s shop is a treasure trove for wine lovers seeking distinctive and daring bottles. It’s well worth the trip for anyone in the New Jersey suburbs. - Jet Wine Bar (Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia)
Jill Weber’s wine bar and bottle shop is a hub for eclectic and exotic selections. If you’re in the neighborhood, it’s an ideal spot to grab a wine that’s sure to stand out. - Solarmyth Wine Bar (Philadelphia)
While they don’t offer takeout, this exceptional wine bar is a must-visit for the city’s wine aficionados. Helmed by one of our earliest graduates, it’s a testament to the quality and creativity our alumni bring to the table.
Beyond Our Network: A Nod to the Cork at Cook
Of course, not all great wine shops in the region are run by our graduates. The Cork at Cook stands out as a fine example, even though it has a history tied to one of our former competitors. Once a wine and food school backed by Philadelphia Magazine, it now serves as a solid resource for local wine lovers. Visiting feels like wandering through the remnants of an old rivalry—a poetic reminder of how far we’ve come.
