The Intermediate (L3) Wine Course

The Accelerated Intermediate Wine Course (L3) offers industry professionals and wine enthusiasts the opportunity to understand the world of wine in an immersive and comprehensive environment. This wine course runs from August 7th to August 12th. Classes are held Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 8 pm. The final exam is on Saturday at 2 pm.

About the Instructor

As Director of Wine Education for the Wine School of Philadelphia, Alana Zerbe oversees this remarkable program. With a career spanning over 15 years in the wine trade, Zerbe brings a wealth of expertise from her extensive experience at wineries, wine schools, and restaurants.

In this program, she brings her students into a transformative educational experience, deepening their love for wine and widening their perspective. For those eager to explore the world’s vineyards, the Intermediate Wine Course (L3) offers an unparalleled opportunity to uncover the secrets and stories within each glass.

It is due to the Wine School of Philadelphia that I attended and graduated from the School for Oenology and Viticulture at the University of California at Davis.

Prerequisites

Students must complete the Foundation program (L2) as a prerequisite, providing them with a solid understanding of wine’s fundamentals. For a comprehensive education journey, participants can choose the Core program, which combines the Intermediate and Foundation courses.

The Wine Course

This course explores the macro-aspects of wine by examining the major wine regions and grape varieties. The Intermediate Wine Course is a  comprehensive look at the diverse wine landscapes that shape the industry today: this includes vineyards in France, Italy, Spain, and Australia, as well as emerging wine scenes in New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, and the United States.

The topics covered in this accelerated program are history, viticulture, winemaking, and tasting and evaluating wines. Students will develop a nuanced understanding of each wine region’s characteristics and nuances through engaging lectures, interactive tastings, and hands-on activities.
