Valdipiatta 2010 Chianti Colli Senesi

Posted by Keith Wallace

Colli Senesi is the wine region surrounding the Tuscan town of Siena. Two of Chianti’s top wine regions –Montepulciano and Montalcino– are located there.  Valdipiatta is a well regarded producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This bottling is sourced from their Montepulciano vineyard along with a few in other parts of Colli Senesi.

Crafted from Prugnolo Gentile (the indigenous clone of Sangiovese), with about 10% of Canaiolo Nero.  Grapes are manually harvested and aged in Slavonian oak for six months after fermentation. This wine offers both quality and value, which is always a good combination.

Harmonious and broad, this Chianti shows fresh cherry and anise with layers of espresso, plum, and toasted cedar. Medium-bodied and well-balanced, the finish starts with bright fruit and finishes with spices.  Pair this with a roasted duck or a port ragu with pappardelle.
