Cook & Corks: Food & Wine Pairing

The art of food and wine pairing is a specialty at the Wine School. After all, we are the folks who created the two most popular food & wine classes in Philadelphia: the Sommelier Smackdown, and the Corked & Forked series of cooking classes. In “Cook & Corks” we invite a chef and sommelier to create a four-course food & wine tasting for you. It’s an unforgettable tasting experience, and one that any foodie will love.

Accelerated Core Wine Course

August 4 @ 2:30 pm - 9:30 pm

August 4th to 8th from 2:30-9:30pm

Earn a complete wine education in a single semester. The Core Wine Program combines our Foundation and Intermediate programs into a unified wine education experience. Plus, the Core Program student saves in tuition by taking both programs in the same semester.

In the Foundation portion of the program, students will learn the techniques and master the knowledge needed to become extraordinary wine tasters. Graduates are able to identity major wine varietals in a blind tasting: a major feat for any wine professional.

In the Intermediate section, students learn about the intricacies of the ever expanding world of wine. Included in the program is the chance to master the wine styles, climates and varietals of all the major wine producing countries.

Accelerated Wine Foundation Course

August 4th to 8th from 2:30-5:30pm

The world of wine is built on the foundation of taste. To stand tall in the wine world, the student must learn to unravel the hidden flavors of wine and speak the language of the senses.

Most wine enthusiasts remain tourists of the grape: they drink and enjoy without ever knowing the greater joys hidden just below the surface. The Foundation Course is your key to unlocking that world. With it, you just may be able to turn a mere hobby into a deeply passionate and creative calling.

In a single week, students will learn the techniques and knowledge to become extraordinary wine tasters. Graduates are able to identity major wine varietals in a blind tasting: a major achievement for any wine industry professional.

Accelerated Intermediate Global Wine Course

August 4th to 8th from 6:30-9:30pm

From the Italian peninsula to the docks of Bordeaux, the Intermediate Certificate of Global Wine Studies is a breathtaking exploration into the world of wine. In a whirlwind of a semester, the secrets of the global wine society are unlocked. Students learn about the wine styles, varietals, and winemaking techniques of all the important wine producing countries.

Upon completion of the program, graduates have a working knowledge of the types and styles of wine available throughout the world: our students become masters of the global vineyard. The Intermediate and the Wine Foundation Certificate are the core certification at the Wine School, and can be taken in tandem. For more information, read about our Core Certificate program.

Wine 101: Learn About Wine

The beer class for everyone. This is our introduction to how beer is made, major beer styles, and brewing history. Eight different brews will be sampled. Beer 101 was featured on the CBS show “What’s Brewing”. This is a great class for beer enthusiasts and budding home brewers alike.

French Wine Academy

Travel across France in a single glass. In this class, we will sample the amazing range of French wines. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Languedoc, Loire, Rhone, Alsace: All the great flavors and stories will be encapsulated in this two hour tasting.

France remains the standard for fine wine around the world.  So, this is an essential class for both the novice wine lover, or the seasoned sommelier in search of a refresher!

Wine & pizza pairing is not only a great combination, it also makes for a fun class. You will enjoy multiple pizzas and wine parings, from the classic Margherita to an over-the-top white truffle number.

Cooking Class with Wine Pairings

A cooking class like no other.  In this class, our top chef teams up with one of our top sommeliers. Together they craft a seasonal and satisfying menu for the night, with a focus on farm-to-table ingredients.

The class includes a cooking demonstration of each dish, along with a full description of the wine pairings by our sommelier-instructor.  You then taste the results for yourself.

Sommelier Smackdown

The Wine School’s signature event!

Imagine two of the city’s top wine professionals competing to create the perfect food & wine pairing…and all for you! We pit one of Philadelphia’s top sommeliers against one of our wine educators. Attendees sample each of food & wine pairings, then choose the winner.

Past participants have included the top sommeliers on the East Coast, plus winemakers, celebrities, and authors. You never know who may show up at the Smackdown, but you can bank on an exceptional food and wine experience.

Imbibe! The Whiskey & Cocktail Class

One of the greatest whiskey authors of our generation, Michael Jackson, often visited 127 22nd Street. That was back before the Wine School, when our building was still occupied by his publisher, Running Press. This class is one of the ways we celebrate his legacy.

A bit of sauced education, this class features everything you ever wanted to know about whiskey, but were afraid to ask: From to whiskey cocktails, to food pairings, to its smokey history. This is the class for lovers of bourbon, scotch, and rye.

Italian Wine Academy
