Schug Pinot Noir 2010 Carneros

Posted by Keith Wallace

Schug Winery is a major player in Northern Cali’s cool wine region of Carneros. Nestled at the bottom of Sonoma and Napa, Carneros has always been prime vineyard territory. Now, it’s reaping the benefits from three generations of serious Pinot Noir cultivation.

There are dozens of different clones of Pinot, and no single one is perfect by itself. One of the tricks of the trade is using a multitude of Pinot clones in each blend. This is true with many grapes, but it’s critical with Pinot. Carneros has been planted with Pinot for long enough to have this game down flat.

The wine is fresh and vibrant with a perfume of ozone, white flowers, and dried roses. Bright red fruit spills onto the palate and includes a blast of rhubarb. Light tannins and body support a finish of dried herbs and flowers and just a bit of cardamom. This is the best value Pinot Noir in the past 5 years. Buy a case and drink it over the summer.

This is a great wine with lighter dishes, like grilled chicken or game.
