Wine School Returns Focus to the Classroom After Court Ruling

A précis of Paul Vigna’s Aug. 3, 2026 article, “Wine School of Philadelphia returns focus to classroom following ‘huge’ courtroom win,” published in The Wine Classroom.

After a turbulent winter and spring, Paul Vigna found the Wine School of Philadelphia returning its attention to what it has done since 2001: teaching wine.

Vigna reported that the school was again enrolling students in its sommelier programs and tasting classes following a May 26 federal court ruling denying an effort by PhillyWine LLC to prevent the school from using the name “Philly Wine School.” The court found that the name had been publicly associated with the Wine School of Philadelphia since at least 2005.

Founder Keith Wallace told Vigna that he felt “blindsided” by the lawsuit because he had actively tried to avoid a legal battle. The two Philadelphia wine schools had existed alongside one another for decades, he noted, despite longstanding friction.

Wallace described litigation between two relatively small businesses as something unlikely to resolve their differences and said the school had deliberately kept its distance rather than escalating the dispute.

The lawsuit nevertheless took a toll. Wallace said the Wine School canceled a semester of academic programming in part to protect students from the controversy. Enrollment in the following semester fell roughly 50% after news of the lawsuit became public, although he said support from students and the broader community had been “fantastic.”

Vigna also spoke with Wallace about what comes next. The litigation may continue through an appeal and potentially additional years in court.

For Wallace, however, the May ruling represented a “huge win.” With classes again filling the calendar, Vigna’s article found a school attempting to put the courtroom behind it and return its focus to students, wine education and the classroom.
