Vending from food truck

Hi there. My friends and I have been heavy into the start up of food truck and craft beer festivals for years in our town in PA. However, after researching the new liquor laws and looking at trends in the wine industry, we decided we want to get into the game ourselves and see if there was a way to license a wine truck for special events and catering. Is that at all possible here yet? We have a great business plan, just need the laws to follow.

Thank you for considering our question!

Danielle,

Very good question. This is possible, but it would take some finesse. There isn’t any laws on the books for a mobile license for a retailer. You would need a temporary permit, of which there are two types.

A Special Occasion Permit is only available to certain types of non-profits. However, they can sell any type of alcohol, for both onsite and offsite consumption. If you wanted a wine store experience, this is the only option.

There is another restriction: any single nonprofit can only receive a SOP 6 times a year. However, if you teamed up with a dozen or so non-profits, you could make this work.

There is also the Catering permit, which is what most beer gardens use. These allow for onsite consumption only. If you wanted to offer a wine-bar experience, this is the one you would want.
