I am planning on enrolling in a course this fall. I’m trying to figure out if the Foundation Course (level 1 & 2) or the CORE course (Level 1,2,3) makes more sense for me. I am a teacher in my late 20s who has developed a passion for wine. I have taken a few classes at the wine school of Philadelphia and have discovered that I am very interested in pursuing wine more seriously, potentially as a career. I understand that upon completing of the CORE course and passing the exam, I would be a certified sommelier. Is this correct? Three major questions:
1) As someone who is just diving into the wine world with no formal expertise/experience, do you recommend taking the Foundation or CORE course this fall?
2) If I take the foundation course, is there an exam at the end? What recognition would this exam get me?
3) Could completion of the foundation course get me a job in the wine industry or do I need to complete the CORE course in order to have any prospect in a career?
Our students often have a wide variety of backgrounds and wine knowledge. It’s not necessary to have studied wine previously, or even worked in a restaurant, to take the course. Provided you are diligent in your studies and attend each class, you will be more than capable of passing the exams at the end.
If you successfully complete the Foundation program you will be certified as a Level 2 Sommelier. If you complete the Intermediate as well, then you will have reached Level 3. As with any of the wine education courses, they demonstrate to a potential employer your commitment and requisite knowledge to work within the industry.

Thank you so much for answering my question! As I expected, the foundation course is an intensive course and I’m not sure I’m qualified given my limited experience in the wine field. Do you think someone with no experience in the wine field could pass the written and blind taste exam of the foundation or CORE program? Also, after passing the exam after the foundation course, what certificate will I hold and what benefit does that get me? Would I be a certified sommelier or is that only after completing the intermediate course?

We offer certification through the National Wine School. Various other groups offer certification as well. You can get an overview of these programs on http://www.somm.us
If you are considering a career change, the Core program is your quickest way to certification (and also offers a cost savings). But, it is an intensive curriculum. To successfully complete the Foundation program there are two exams: a blind taste exam and a written exam. For the Intermediate, there is an online exam and an essay exam.
