This program offers the rare opportunity to work one-on-one with the founder of the Wine School. The program is designed to make a lasting positive impact on the student but also allows them to make a lasting difference in the local wine trade.
In the Master of American wine, students are immersed in regional winemaking. Students will focus on a single winery, working with school founder Keith Wallace with researching, interviewing, and visiting with the winemaker. The final project for each student will be a publishable article based on research, visits, and tastings. The student’s work will be featured on the school’s online magazine Local Wines
This project revolves around in-depth conversations with winemakers and winery staff. Topics covered include
- Regional specific challenges in the vineyard, and how the winery address those issues.
- Winemaking considerations when making wines locally.
- Common advice for a new local winemaker?
- Wine styles, philosophies, and overall impression of the winery and winemaker.
- The economic impact of wine tourism and DtC on the winery.
- Tasting notes of wines that exemplify the best the winery has to offer.
Our hope is to capture the essence of the winery, along with memorable anecdotes and fun digressions discovered along the way. The student will be helping to build the blueprint of what is local wine. How do we define regional? If you are on the East Coast and want to collaborate with Keith Wallace, we consider local to be within a three-hour drive from the Wine School of Philadelphia. As long as that distance is respected, it can be in any state (MD, PA, NJ, NY, or DE).
