Everything needed to brew beer. This “Best of Philly” brewing program will give you the hands-on experience any brewer needs. Presented in a light-hearted but pragmatic style, the weekly classes offer both lecture and lab elements.
Students will learn by doing: by the second day of class students will begin brewing a clone of “Pliny the Elder,” one of the most famous beers in America.
Students will also be trained as beer stewards (we hate the word sommelier), including the complexities of malts and hop varieties.
Class topics include the following:
Overview of Fermentation
Sensory Training. A focus on beer esters, hop flavors, and faults.
Beer Styles. A compendium tasting of classic beer styles, their origins, and modern interpretations.
The Wort. A hands-on approach to building the grain bill. In this laboratory class, you will learn how to create a wort from a full grain malt, use a hydrometer, and test water PH. This is a hands-on laboratory class.
The Boil & Fermentation. In this class, you will learn about hop additions, proper boil techniques, and fermentation essentials. This is a hands-on laboratory class.
Racking & Wet Hopping. The essentials of fermentation will be reviewed in this class, plus a hands-on tutorial in racking and wet hopping.
Kegging & Bottle Conditioning. In this class, the final steps of beer making will be completed. This includes kegging and bottle conditioning the beers.
