Advanced Mediterranean Wine

This eight-week program is organized around three key topics, which are discussed in detail below. These include the Wines of the Mediterranean Islands, the Origin of Winemaking, and the Oldest Wine Regions of Europe. This course offers up wine history in a dramatic and delicious way.
Wines of the Mediterranean Islands
Some of the most ancient of wine civilizations thrived within the Mediterranean Islands. These islands are now being re-discovered by sommeliers. In this program, we focus our attention on the significant wines, both historic and modern.
Classes include wines from the following regions.
- Balearic Islands
Origin of Winemaking: The Ancient Vineyards of the Mediterranean
The history of winemaking begins in the Mediterranean basin. We follow the ancient path of Vitis Vinifera from the Middle East to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean sea and follow wine culture to its southernmost tip. Along the way, we explore the exciting wine regions rising up from such ancient roots.
Classes include wines from the following countries.
- Tunisia / Morocco
Oldest Wine Regions of Europe
Winemaking moved from Mediterranean Africa to Spain, France, and Italy. As Rome moved to center stage, the world of wine changed dramatically. In this section of this Advanced Sommelier program, we study the most ancient of wine regions, all of which hug the Mediterranean.
Classes include wines from the following wine regions.
- Mediterranean Spain
- Southern France
- Southern Italy
Greece: the Elder Statesman of the Mediterranean
In this section of the Advanced wine course, we focus on the often overlooked Greek wine regions. Following the Phoenicians, there is no older wine culture in the world than the Greeks. This is a master class on an essential but often overlooked wine region and the joys to be found within.
Classes will include wines from these Greek wine regions
- Northern Greece
- Central Greece
- Southern Greece
- Aegean Islands
