As of 2012, we offer two levels of certification at the Wine School: Wine Enthusiast and Professional Certification. Your choice between the two depends on what your goals are.
The Wine Enthusiast Level
This is the best option for people who want to learn about wine but are not interested in professional testing and certification. You get the same amazing experience, but at a greatly reduced price. In effect, you are auditing the class for your own enrichment.
The Wine Professional Level
For those seeking the highest level of support, certification, and training, this is the route to take. Professional certification is handled by the National Wine School and goes through the state of California, not Pennsvlyania. This level includes the full support of both the National Wine School and the Wine School of Philadelphia.
National Wine School
The National Wine School is based in Los Angeles, with online testing facilities located in both California and Houston, Texas.
The National Wine School offers online testing and professional accreditation for it's affiliated schools across the United States. All professional certification goes through the state of California, as is fitting for the wine trade.
What is Certification?
There are three types of certifications for the industry. The first is a degree in viticulture from an accredited university. The next is professional certification from a state-sanctioned trade school, and the third is a novelty certification from a consumer school.
Winemakers and academics gravitate to university degrees. Professional certification, however, is typically sought by sommeliers, instructors, writers, and importers. Novelty certification is typically sought by folks simply looking to have fun while learning about wine.
The National Wine School certifies all wine professionals, with specialization for professional wine instructors and sommeliers.
Certified National Sommelier, CRS.
Certified Wine Instructor, CWI.

The first step is our critically acclaimed cours a dégustation, the Wine Foundation Course. This course gives the students the techniques and knowledge to become extraordinary wine tasters. Learn to unravel the hidden flavors of wine, and to develop the coveted skill of blind tasting.
The next leap is to take your palate on a world tour of wine. In the Global Course in Wine/Intermediate Certificate, the student is exposed to all the major wines and wine regions of the world. A highly detailed program, Global offers our students everything needed to master the global vineyard.
Most of our students take both programs, and they graduate with a level of skill & knowledge that could make Robert Parker blush. For the most ardent of wine students, we also proudly offer the Core Wine Certificate Program, which combines both programs in a single semester and saves the student hundreds of dollars.
Finally, we offer the Advanced Wine Program. The last step toward the coveted Diploma Oenotropae, the Advanced Program consists of four semesters of study. This semester, we are offering the Burgundy & Rhone section.
